Summary

Steel Magnolias is the story of six Southern Louisiana women's small town lives and the trials and tribulations that come with it. Truvy, a beauty shop owner hires on Annelle, a young girl with a troubled past who is looking for a job on the day of Shelby Eatonton's wedding day. Shelby and her mother M'Lynn arrive at Truvy's for their wedding day primping just as Clairee Belcher, Truvy's best friend arrives to gossip about the other ladies in their small parish. The ever so charming Ousier Boudreaux (M'Lynn's neighbor) makes an appearance to complain about M'Lynn's husband. The women stay friends the remainder of the film. They are together for all of the major holidays, as well as small gossip sessions at Truvy's Beauty Salon. The Christmas after Shelby's wedding, Shelby tells her mother that she is pregnant, and M'Lynn is not as excited as Shelby. Shelby has diabetes, and many doctors have told her that having children would put a strain of her kidneys. Shelby pleads with her mother, telling her that she would "rather have thirty minutes of wonderful, than a lifetime of nothing special." The story continues and Shelby gives birth to a healthy little boy.
